A house we carry
Cattelan Italia started in 1979 in Carrè, in the province of Vicenza, with one narrow speciality: tables. Giorgio Cattelan had grown up in his father's joinery, and the first pieces were marble and crystal, machined with methods that were unusual at the time. The factory went up in 1982, on the site the company still occupies.
Chairs, beds, sideboards and mirrors came later, but the table is still what people recognise. Skorpio, designed by Andrea Lucatello, carries the sculptural metal base the house is known for, and now exists in wood, round and ceramic versions. The “Keramik” suffix marks a genuine technical shift: large-format stoneware tops opened up finishes the workshop could not reach before.
Paolo Cattelan has run the company since 2014, the second generation having joined in 1995. Buying the Florentine upholstery house Arketipo in 2011 added sofas to a catalogue built until then on hard surfaces. Production stays in Carrè.
Artopia carries Cattelan Italia in Geneva. Ceramic tops and complex bases photograph badly, so the Rue du Rhône showroom is the place to judge them.
