A house we carry
J. Adams & Co sums up its structure in one line: designed in London, made in Birmingham. The studio is in Clerkenwell, and the Birmingham metalworking factory has been running for more than fifty years, keeping every stage in-house from raw material to final assembly. The brand was set up in the mid-2010s as a sister company to an established industrial business already on that site.
The vocabulary is solid brass and glass: turning, CNC machining, laser cutting, blown glass and precisely cut reeded glass, assembled using traditional metalworking methods. Flume, launched in 2019 with a silhouette borrowed from mid-century and Art Deco design, has become the best-selling collection. Strata plays on refraction through reeded glass.
The company points to wabi-sabi and accepts the variations of handwork rather than correcting them. That fits its clientele: according to its creative director, architects and interior architects account for around 90 per cent of turnover. Stated production time is twelve to fourteen weeks.
Artopia carries J. Adams & Co in Geneva. On a project that lead time needs planning from the outset, which is the trade-off for made-to-order work in a single factory.
